Everlast Boxing Bag

I took some boxing lessons at 24 hour fitness. I had a great time with the trainer and wanted to keep it going. I purchased an Everlast boxing bag on Amazon and I am really enjoying hitting it for a few minutes each day.

It's good exercise and a great stress reducer!

Bishop O'Dowd Basketball Celebration

I had the opportunity to attend the Bishop O'Dowd basketball celebration. The event took place at Bishop O'Dowd high school on September 2, 2017. It was a great event looking back at how the basketball program got started and how the great tradition of those days continue today. It was a great opportunity for many to see their former teammates again after many years.

If you click on the picture below you can see a few pictures taken at the event. Go Dragons!!!

Modify Watch Company Makes Great Watches in San Francisco, CA

Modify Watch company is a small company in San Francisco, CA. You think American companies don't make cool stuff anymore? Think again. Modify Watches started up several years ago. It's really not a start-up any longer. This company has built up a customer base with great products and superb customer service.

If you like sports, they have a watch for you. If you are into non-profit work, they have a watch for you. If you are into the arts or just about any other subject, they have watches that you will love.

I have placed many orders with Modify Watches. I have lost track because I actually placed a few orders before creating an account. I have told friends and family about this great little company that makes and sells cool stuff right in San Francisco and they have placed orders too.

Here are just a few pictures of the watches that I currently enjoy wearing daily. I'm a Giants and A's fan, but don't worry all MLB team watches are available for purchase! The watch that displays CS with a basketball was designed by Willie Cauley-Stein, my Favorite Sacramento Kings player. Read the story of why Willie helped design a series of watches under his name on the Modify Watch web site. You can read the story about Willie designing the watches in memory of a good friend who passed from cancer way too early. Proceeds from sales support cancer research. Find that story under Modify Watches partners.  The link to that page is HERE.

You can access the Modify Watches web site by clicking HERE. When you buy your watch be sure to tell them Michael H. referred you! Modify Watches and their web site is a great share with friends and family. They will thank you.

Mindset: The New Psychology of Success-Perfect Book for Recruiters and HR Professionals

The economy has improved since the great recession. The economic improvments have been very slow and the official unemployment rate has dropped to what most economists consider full employment.

Millions of workers lost jobs during the great recession. A large number who were laid off never found employment again over the course of the recovery. These former workers don't count as unemployed because they are not eligible for unemployment and they are not actively looking. They basically gave up.

As the official unemployment numbers dropped recruiters and HR professionals have complained of a labor shortage. They state that applicants don't have the skills necessary to fill their positions. There is no doubt many jobs have technical requirements that require specific degrees and work experience.
There are millions of unemployed workers with and without college degrees longing for employment.   I don't think the issue is with the candidate pool. The main issue is the people hiring have a fixed mindset.

I strongly suggest people in the hiring profession read the book Mind Set: The New Psychology of Success. If you read this book with an open mind you may discover there is no shortage of qualified workers. The problem may be you and your closed mindset not seeing the potential of candidates that are right under your nose. People can learn just about anything and your most talented and technical staff are capable of doing that training. Get rid of your closed mindset and take on the challenge of  training the people you really need to fill positions. People in the growth mindset don't shrink away from challenges. Challenge and stretch yourself. Put away all those manufactured job requirements made up by managers looking for dream candidates.

There are millions of workers of all ages who are not participating in the workforce today. Many are in their prime. A high percentage of these workers would thrive in learning the skills that are needed to fill your positions. They are determined to stretch themselves as workers. Are you willing to do the same type of stretching in your role?  Will it take time to train these candidates? Yes!  and when that training is complete you will have dedicated employees who will be open to change and stretching themselves in the future when new skills and abilities are needed.

People of a fixed mindset make themselves feel better when things are difficult by assigning blame. Are you blaming the candidate pool for your inability to recruit?  Stretch yourself as HR professionals and recruiters as you would expect employees to stretch themselves to learn and succeed in their job responsibilities. It's a win-win situation.

Become a growth minded HR professional. A good start can is by reading: Mindset: The New Psychology of Success. Millions of people like myself are counting on people who recruit and hire with the ability to think outside of the box. Good luck!!!

Good Jobs are Stolen Every Day and a Wall will NOT Help

The politics of fear and hate are crazy. Politicians and their followers ignorantly believe that building a wall will protect jobs for American citizens. In California one in ten service workers are undocumented. The jobs worked by this 10% of the population are in the fields, in the kitchen preparing food or washing dishes, gardening and just about every other job that most born in America workers are not rushing to fill.

What would happen in California for example if 10% of the workforce disappeared? How will those fruits and vegetables get to your table? Speaking of tables, how well do you think most restaurants will operate if most of their workers were to suddenly disappear? You think the U.S. will be better off? And that does not take into account how much these workers spend in the local economy. Low wage workers in general spend their entire paychecks in their local communities. Every dime goes to local businesses. Send these workers back to Mexico and elsewhere and your communities will suffer.

We fear the low wage earner, but want to increase H1B visas for tech workers who take high wage jobs from computer science graduates every year since about 1990. Huge high tech companies for decades have falsely stated that universities are not graduating enough science, engineering and IT students. This is pure and unadulterated bullshit. There has been a surplus of graduates in all those fields and they can't find jobs because large corporations would rather send these jobs overseas or hire someone with a H1B visa at much lower wages.

Those who are so worked up about jobs Americans don't want are very silent about high wage jobs being stolen and given away to foreign workers so corporations can boost profits and please share holders by keeping wages down. There are many PHD holders involuntarily working in other fields because they can't find work in high-tech, engineering or science.

The information highway and technical areas is where highway robbery is taking place and politicians on both sides of the isle are silent, but not ignorant about the thievery. To Hell with the damn wall on the Mexican border. It will be a huge waste of money. The good paying jobs are being shipped overseas or given away to those with H1B visas and no wall of any size is going to help. Congress and the President need to say no to the theft of high wage jobs.

Boston Trip 2017

I had a great time in Boston. I went to watch the Boston Marathon, but enjoyed the entire city. There is a lot to see in Boston. If you are going, I suggest at least five days to see the city and attractions. I was there a couple days and it was not long enough. Boston has a great public transportation system. It's call the T-Line and it is very easy to use and get around to different locations outside of the downtown area. If you are staying in an Airbnb outside of the city it will get you downtown easily.

Age Discrimination in the Workforce is Rampant

Age discrimination in the workforce is rampant. If you have been laid off in your 50's or 60's finding a new job can feel impossible. Human Resources spin the skills gap stories, but the biggest reason for older people not getting hired is plain and simple, they are not in their 20's anymore.

The workforce participation rate which measures unemployment more accurately than the unemployment rate has not been this low since 1977 as the economy was coming off the worst recession since World War II.  For the past three years the participation rate has been stuck at 62.7% according to the Bureau of Labor web site. Unemployment was high and jobs were just coming back in 1977. We are currently in low unemployment with rates in the 5% range.

So why are so many workers in their prime years not working? Millions of jobs were lost in 2008 when the U.S. economy hit the worst recession since the Great Depression. Most of those jobs did not come back. Technology advances were suppose to increase productivity and wages of workers, but in many cases automation filled jobs and rehiring did not take place. Automation and robots are eliminating the need to have so many workers. This is especially true in manufacturing where repeated tasks can often be done by machines. In addition, the unemployment rate is low while the participation rate is high because millions are no longer counted as unemployed. They don't collect benefits and they have given up looking for work. They don't count as unemployed.

New job creation numbers have been excellent over the last few years. Older workers did not fare well in landing new jobs. Millions of healthy, educated and experienced older workers would like to be working and are being discriminated against. It's alway subtle of course, but it is age discrimination. Ageism is the new popular word for thanks for applying, but you are not an exact match to the job description. How many thousands and thousands receive these thanks, but no thanks emails sent by automation weekly? Depressing numbers no doubt.

Every day older workers are pushed out the door in favor of younger employees. It starts with job responsiblities being taken away, not being included in important meetings and years of service being rewarded with assignments nobody else wants. More directly,  employers go out of their way to make them miserable so they will quit or retire early. Being pushed out the door is very rough for workers in their 50's, and workers in their 60's are forced to take Social Security early when they would much rather wait until they are older when their benefits are higher. These workers are getting screwed in the workplace and then screwed when they have to collect benefits early because of finances.

Older workers are reliable and productive and being employed gives them purpose. Current Human Resource practices which encourage age discrimination has destroyed the financial and mental lives of millions. The next time you read a story by any corporation having recruiting issues because of a lack of qualified applicants, I encourage you to have no empathy. Corporations and organizations of all sizes have created these shortages on their own. They have tossed employees who were often their most dedicated and hardworking like garbage from a holiday party. If recruitment becomes a serious issue these same employers should remember what goes around comes around. Hopefully, most seniors who have been pushed out the door will eventually be able to laugh at how stupidly they were treated and realize they are now in a better place.

Those practicing ageism should remember some day soon you will be that older person.

MLB 2017 and Coaching from the Couch

MLB 2017 kicked off earlier this week. It's time for all couch managers to report for duty. I watch or listen to the San Francisco Giants regularly. Giants couch managers always have input for manager Bruch Bochy.

The Giants offense has been fine out of the gate. What wins pennants? Pitching decides who will be in the playoffs. Of course, solid defense and run production are important. When a team has offense, defense and strong pitching their chances of playing in October go up dramatically.

The starting pitching for the Giants has been good. Matt Cain excited early in his debut, but it could have been worse had it not been for some good defense, offense and a clutch out by reliever Cory Gearrin. The rest of the relievers appeared to be in 2016 mode. Giants relievers need to step-up and own the role of getting outs.

My first couch managing is a suggestion to manager Bruce Bochy. Enough of leaving relievers out there who clearly don't have it. It's very doubtful that any reliever who puts several men on base and then is responsible for having those bases cleared is suddenly going to find their pitches.  I know you are a former catcher and manager who is dedicated to letting pitchers get out of jams. Bruce we love you as the Giants manager and you have more baseball knowledge in your little finger than us couch managers have in our entire bodies, but you need to walk to the mound and pull those guys sooner. Please look out at the rubber and ask yourself, is this going to get any better? And then make that signal to the bullpen and give somebody else a chance, sooner rather than later.

Look for 158 more games of unsolicitated advice coming your way.

Go Bochy! Go Giants!!!

Low Unemployment? Shortage of Qualified Workers? No Way!!!

The economy has been growing at a slow and steady pace for years. Official unemployment figures have dropped dramatically. Unemployment in many states are in the range of 5% and some economists are stating we are at full employment. Some employers are complaining that they can't find qualified applicants.
  1. Ok, ok hold on a minute. If all the above is true why has the labor force participation dropped so dramatically? In 2016 the labor participation rate was the lowest seen in the last decade at 62.8%. The number of workers in their prime working years who are not working and are not actively seeking work has not been this high since the 1970's. Many of these people have given up looking. Many would like to be working and they don't count as being unemployed. We are talking about millions of possible job candidates who don't show up in our unemployment statistics.

  2. What about the millions who are working part-time and would like to be working full-time? There are an estimated 6 million part-time workers who work for little to no benefits and are paid low wages who have not been able to make the jump to full time.  They don't count as unemployed either.

  3. How about older workers? Every year thousands and thousands of older workers are pushed out of jobs in favor of younger workers. Many of these employees in their 50's and 60's did nothing wrong and contributed daily to business operations. Some trained the people who replaced them and are experts with technology even though not being up to date is often an excuse used for their dismissal. Their departure starts with work being reassigned to new and younger staff and eventually the employer makes them so miserable they quit or retire if they can. Again, we are talking about millions who would like to be working, but are also not counted in those low unemployment statistics. The most dedicated and hard workers end up as part of a low labor participation rate statistic. Thanks for your decades of service. Sadly these same ex-workers apply, apply, and apply for positions and the only response they receive are form letters saying they don't meet the employers current needs or qualifications. Thanks for applying, but we see from your experience that you are not in your 20's or 30's so we won't be pursuing your application.
News stories claiming full employment based on the unemployment rate are missing the bigger story that millions have given up and have been pushed to the sidelines. Human resource staff and recruiters suggesting they can't find qualified workers are leaving out the bigger story that they don't train new hires anymore. HR is baffled by the concept of a senior engineer training a new college engineering graduate. Apprenticeship programs? Oh my goodness, we don't do that!

Statistics can read anyway you would like them to read. It's not fake news or a fake story. One statistic paints part of the picture. It's really too bad for millions who would like to work that HR professionals, corporations and recruiters don't see the picture at all.

SF Giants-Kelby Tomlinson Fights for Utility Position

Many NCAA fans including myself are enjoying the tournament despite our brackets having lots of checkmarks next to missed selections.

It won't be long and the tournament will have a winner and it will be time to move on to the regular MLB season. I am a SF Giants fan and I am looking forward to seeing games at AT&T Park in April.

The Giants have several infielders competing for utility positions. One of these players is Kelby Tomlinson. I appreciate his effort and attitude as he tries to stay on the roster for opening day. Regardless of the opening day roster, Kelby will be staying with the Giants franchise for now. If one of the more veteran players is selected for the utility position he will end up with the farm club, maybe  in Sacramento Triple A. Tomlinson has improved over the last couple seasons, especially with his defense. He has come through with some timely hits over the past two years also. I am rooting for him and hope he is on the opening day roster. If not it's good to know he could be called up at any given time to help the club. Tomlinson is picking the brains of veterans and this should serve his career well. With such a great attitude, I hope that career continues to be with the San Francisco Giants.

The SF Giants web site highlights Tomlinson's efforts to be on the roster opening day. You can read the story and watch some short video clips on the Giants site by clicking HERE.

Go Tomlinson! Go Giants!!!

Protecting Jobs Americans Don't Want and Outsourcing Jobs Americans DO Want?

What interesting times we live in. In 2017 serious debate takes place about a wall stretching literally more than a thousand miles along the U.S. and Mexico. The main reasons expressed by proponents of the wall is to keep America safe from illegal immigrants. These reasons entail protecting American jobs and protecting the U.S. against terrorism.

This wall will cost billions of dollars to  build and billions of dollars to maintain. I have some comments for proponents:
  1. I live in California. For at least several years more people are leaving California (not unique to State) to return to Mexico than coming into California from Mexico. Most people in this state don't see a big threat from illegal immigration and many people believe if there is a problem as suggested more agents along the border would be more effective than any wall. Ask China how their great wall is doing. Part of it is great for tourists, but the rest of it crumbles.

  2. It's all about jobs, jobs, jobs is another reason proponents want a wall. Why are proponents so concerned about immigrants taking jobs most Americans won't take on? I don't see these proponents getting in an uproar over good paying jobs that have been outsourced in the technology area. These are actually jobs Americans want. So we don't want immigrants to steal service industry or agricultural jobs, but it's ok for high paying jobs in technology and other sectors to go overseas? This makes no economic sense.  What if this wall is built and it keeps immigrants in the U.S. instead of keeping them out? Many workers from agriculture go back and forth from the U.S. and Mexico. A wall and the threat of not being able to return to the U.S. may discourage workers from going home after their agricultural jobs end.

  3. The San Francisco Bay area ranks last in the U.S. for the condition of roads, bridges and highways. After heavy rains our infrastructure including dams and levies are in serious need of repairing and upgrading. Many of us would rather see funds spent on these projects and in plain language to hell with a wall. Projects to maintain and build infrastructure will do more for our economy in the short and long run than any stupid wall. I suspect infrastructure is not perfect in other states and most states would love to have billions of dollars that would be spent on this wall to build and maintain the infrastructure needed to keep their economies humming.

  4. My message to leaders in both parties is to lead us by building projects that will move us forward. Please, please, please no more distractions about phones being tapped and other silly things that are more fantasy than reality. The real threat to America is crumbling infrastructure not illegal immigration. Focus on the real issues instead of the distractions. The wall is clearly more a distraction than an actual need.

Robots are Taking American Jobs and No Wall will Help

Politics always clouds reality. This is especially true with economics and specifically jobs in the U.S. The latest flurry of soundbites is the spouted theory that encouraging corporations to move their factories back to American shores will be a jobs creation bonanza. This scenario is sheer fantasy that sounds good, especially to one particular politician's fan base.

I just purchased the book "Rise of the Robots-Technology and the Threat of a Jobless Future". I am only a few pages into the book as I write this post. The main premise early in the book is Americans and our friends up north in Canada have been moving away from labor intensive jobs for a very long time and technology is moving forwards, not backwards. For decades mechanization has reduced labor hours on manufacturing lines. Cars are built with a fraction of the number of workers as machines have taken over specific tasks like placing windshields in cars and then rapidly being able to retool themselves to place seats in cars. Each one of these and many other actions reduce the number of employees in car factories.

The automobile industry is just one example. Amazon uses robots in their warehouses to quickly move down an isle, find the product needed and send it down a conveyor line for workers to package and send on it's way to shipping. As robotics improve to the point where they can see two dimensional (which is already happening) the need for humans to package the products will be eliminated too.

The service industry is about to be dramatically impacted by robots and high technology. Already we see automation in supermarkets where self checkout isles reduce the number of workers needed. It's anticipated the fast food industry will see robots reducing the need for many entry level jobs which young and first time job seekers have traditionally depended. Robots in the near future could be molding and making the perfect McDonalds hamburger and sending down an assembly line to self check out counters. Innovation will also reduce the need for first line supervisors.

America has been known for innovation since the birth of our nation. Agriculture was the bulk of jobs in the 19th century and everyone knows how machines changed the way food was planted and harvested replacing millions of jobs in farm labor.

Politicians who claim a great number of jobs will be created by bringing companies back to American shores are blowing political smoke and not talking economic reality. No doubt jobs will be created by repatriating jobs, but they will be technical positions maintaining and improving robots.

We need to start seriously thinking about a society that receives an income that is not based on working a traditional work week. Our society is based on consumption and if the masses don't have an income to buy then we will see a lack of purchasing power, less production and a less need for workers. Owners of capital and share holders will see drastic drops in profits. I am amazed at the number of people who think a minimum livable wage kills jobs. Workers who are paid more spend more and the argument that it kills jobs is bogus. More jobs are lost by technology improvements including robotics than workers invading our shores or workers obtaining higher wages for entry level work.

It's also time to put politics aside and figure out a way for all workers to benefit from increased productivity that has been a mainstay in the economy. Since the 1970's the pie has been sliced thiner for workers while owners of capital and share holders have enjoyed a greater and greater portion. It is NOT socialism to share some of the pie with those who will spend 90% plus of their incomes on the products and services being produced. In the long term everyone will benefit including owners of capital and share holders. No one benefits by continuing the insanity of stagnate incomes.

The next time a politician blames job loses on immigrants or minimum wage proponents or other scary scenarios remember that is  all political mumbojumbo  and has nothing to do with economics and the great innovative American job scene.

Oroville Dam and U.S. Infrastructure

Northern Californians have their eyes on the Oroville Dam as the situation seems to change by the hour. The Dam itself is fine, but the gateways leading water out of the dam have been damaged. This damage came at a point when the lake behind the dam reached capacity due to a series of storms. Northern California is currently experiencing several days of sunny weather giving water managers time to plan for the storms coming.

California like most of the nation is not alone in it's need to update major infrastructure. The Oroville Dam was completed in 1968. Older infrastructure obviously needs to be maintained with more rigor than newer structures. Are we putting the resources needed into maintaining bridges, water systems, electrical grids, transportations systems like train tracks and airports?

This blogger thinks we are failing. New projects like speed-rail become so political it takes forever to get from the drawing-board to implementation. The same goes for building and maintaining new bridges and maintaining the ones already in place. Airports almost across the board need to be upgraded. Only airports built recently have the ability to meet demand. The same goes for electrical grids and water storage.

I hope President Trump is serious about building up the nations infrastructure. Republicans and Democrats believe it's important. Coming up with the $$$ is always the main issue. We need to stop talking and make it happen.

I  hope a crisis in Northern California can be averted. When the emergency passes and it comes time to make repairs the facts will most likely point to Oroville Dam as being one more piece of infrastructure that did not receive the funding and upgrades needed to keep it in A+ shape. The policy of doing only what is necessary needs to change dramatically. Our economy is tied directly to a working infrastructure. It's time to build, build, build and maintain, maintain, maintain. If this happens we will see our economy grow faster than it has over the last 20 years.

U.S. Economy, Jobs, Infrastructure, Taxation and...

The President of the U.S. and all other politicians are not talking about things this blogger is interested in. People in Washington have their political blinders on and are only thinking and talking about push-button issues like the travel ban. No doubt this issue is crucial and it should be discussed in great detail. I want to hear about other things too.

What's happening on the job front? Are plans being drawn up to get infrastructure projects going? Are funds going to become available for states and localities to get things going while interest rates are low and to take advantage of workers who are available? I am one American who does not believe the job market is very strong. Unemployment is low, but those statistics don't take into account part-time workers who would like to work full time, older people who have departed from the workforce before they wanted, young people who are underemployed. These factors are part of the reason incomes have not climbed much over the 30 years. Fixing American infrastructure and creating good jobs while doing so should be a top priority. Washington and both parties are more interested in political agendas and instilling fear.

What about tax reform? Americans from both parties have wanted to simplify the taxes structure for a long time. How about getting it done! Everyone agrees tax codes are way too complicated. Most Americans should be able to do their taxes on a one page form. Make it happen! Both parties need to work together to close loopholes and make it clear how much corporations are paying. Fair taxation for corporations and citizens should not be a partisan issue. This message has been made clear over and over again by the American people. It's time for Washington to listen and take concrete action.

Washington, please put away the hateful partisan politics. Fear will not grow the economy or protect Americans from terrorists. Act with some courage on behalf of All Americans and focus on the work that needs to be done. Everyone will benefit if we spend and build wisely and flush all the hate for people who look different and/or act differently down the toilet.

Citizens who want better jobs, rising incomes, strong defense against real enemies, infrastructure as strong as our defense and peaceful communities are tired of the divide and hate that some politicians are peddling.

The time for positive action is Now!!!

San Francisco Giants have Two Prospects Ready to Go!

Giants have Two Top Prospects Ready for their Turn-The link on the left will take you to a video and story on two top prospects for the San Francisco Giants. Tyler Beede and Christian Arroyo. Tyler will bring additional pitching to the rotation. Christian will fill a very important need for a steady third baseman. Both players are young and in the San Francisco Giants minor league system. They have enjoyed success with Double-A Richmond. Giants fans should expect to see these talented players in San Francisco soon.

It's hard to say when these players will get their big break and a chance to play in San Francisco.  Beede is gaining consistency with his pitches and Arroyo is obtaining additional experience and patience at the plate. I suspect they would be starters already on most MLB teams. With patience these two young players are sure to see many days at AT&T park in the future and I hope they can enjoy their time in the minors. When they move up to San Francisco they will be part of the next run for a World Series ring.

I hope both Beede and Arroyo know Giants fans are aware of their potential and look forward to seeing them in the future.

Go Arroyo! Go Beede! Go Giants!!!

Ten Weeks Until MLB 2017!

After the Super Bowl on Feb 5, 2017 we will be so close to spring training and getting closer to MLB season 2017. After the political season and election, I am so grateful that baseball season is on the way.

I considered writing about politics during the off-season. I could not do it. I'm not good at labeling people in any way. You know the whole conservative versus liberal mud slinging. I'm pretty balanced about it all, but nobody seems to want view points where mud is not involved. That led to a silent blog. I studied international economics, but I have lost my enthusiasm from the lack of civility by both parties and their supporters in this last election.

Baseball is not without sadness. Sadly, the MLB community lost two players in car accidents over the weekend. Yordano Ventura and Andy Marte were killed in two separate car accidents. Both accidents reportedly took place in the Dominican Republic. My heart goes out to the families, friends and fans of these players. It sadly reminded me of Oscar Taveras a rookie with the St. Louis Cardinals who was killed in 2014 in a tragic car accident. I was fortunate enough to see Taveras in his St. Louis. His second at bat was a home run. My heart goes out to all families who have lost children way too soon.

In San Francisco Giants news Joan Gregorio is getting himself ready for an eventual start in the big leagues. You can read what Gregorio is doing to prepare himself for that day by clicking HERE.

Go MLB! Go SF Giants!!!
